Even know that Microsoft has announced the new Windows 10 for smartphones, that doesn’t mean updates for Windows Phone 8.1 is over. Since the fall of last year, we have been hearing about WP 8.1 GDR 2, however, that never came. Some of the features that was mentioned in the GDR 2 come with Lumia Denim, like Folders, but besides that, we haven’t heard much until today.
Today, Microsoft published new information on the newest General Distribution Release 2 for Windows Phone 8.1. The new updates will be included:
- Video over LTE – Customize specific settings and behavior for Video over LTE to meet mobile operator requirements including Showing or hiding the LTE video calling switch, Enabling video conferencing, etc.
- Restore Start tile layout – Append the OEM-defined Start screen layout to the bottom of the user’s backed up Start screen layout when the user restores their device from a backup.
- More phone languages – Bangla (Bangladesh), Khmer, Kiswahili, Lao
- VPN Configuration service provider – New AlwaysOn value in ConnectionType; New Policies/AppIdleTimeout setting in the CSP
It is also worth noticing that there is no new hardware requirement, meaning that things like new screen resolution or new source set like Snapdragon 805 or even the 810 is nowhere to be found. The reason for that might have to do with the release of Windows 10 later this year, which will definitely include all of these goodies.
Stay tuned, as the story is still developing, and I’ll update you with the newest information as it arrived.
